LOCATION

A laneway in the lee of historic Martin Place and in the very heart of Sydney’s most prestigious commercial real estate — it doesn’t get better than this.

THE NEIGHBOURHOOD

Merchant is surrounded by the very best that city life has to offer. Wine and dine in European-style laneways or on Sydney’s most sparkling rooftops. Shop the exclusive inner city shopping arcades and take an easy stroll to Sydney’s iconic galleries and museums.

THE BUILDING

Merchant is the lower 9 levels of a larger complex that also includes 97 residential apartments and a Japanese restaurant. The development was completed in 1998 by Walker Corporation and was well constructed, endowing it with a solid structure, modern services, and balconies to most spaces.

Merchant has its own entrance, lobby and lift and is engulfed by its own exclusive strata plan, operating largely independently of the residential tower.

Merchant is designed and constructed as 49 serviced apartments. W Property specialises in converting older style buildings into functioning, stylish work spaces.

THE HISTORY

Hosking Place was named after the first elected Mayor of Sydney, John Hosking (1806-1882). A merchant and Mayor of Sydney at the age of 36, John Hosking was enormously successful. The mercantile firm he established with his brother-in-law, Hughes and Hosking, was perhaps the largest milling and mercantile business in the colony at the time. However, their success was not to last. The depression of the early 1840’s, followed by the 1841 explosion and collapse of the 4-storey flour store at their new flour mills in Sydney’s Darling Harbour, brought the company to its knees and with it, the Bank of Australia.
